Bujo- Bullet Journaling

Bujo- Bullet Journaling

Sometimes I wonder where would I be if I hadn’t started journaling 6 years ago… Following a huge life change in 2017, I was struggling to find my path. My once consistent, sometimes boring, life was uprooted and my plans for the future were uncertain. Around this time I had heard about bullet journaling as a way to stay organized.  I had no idea that this journal, would help me focus on self care, heal my knee pain, lose weight, maintain healthy habits, achieve more at work, find a creative outlet, and so much more. My journal has become one of my most treasured possessions.

What is a Bujo?

The term Bullet Journal refers to a method of journaling developed by Ryder Carroll in the 1990’s. He developed the method as a tool to help him manage his ADHD. His method gives users a framework to customize to their needs. The bullet journal has also inspired a community of people who have mixed principles of Carroll’s journaling with creative journaling.

Why Journal?

We’ve all heard that keeping a journal can help you get to know yourself. A journal can also be a place to track your goals, celebrate your wins, express your creativity, and can help you when you feel stuck. You don’t need to write paragraphs- you can use check lists, graphs, charts, or images. It’s a highly customizable activity that should adapt to your needs over time. Here are some of the many things a journal can help with:

  • Tracking your goals
  • Seeing your progress over time
  • Identify what is holding you back, or trends in your activites
  • Mental health
  • Memories
  • Relaxation and creativity boost

How and what to Journal:

All you need is paper and a pen. I prefer a grid-lined notebook because I like to track goals via charts and checklists. Let me give you some ideas on what you can track with your journal…

  • Wellness
    • Symptoms
    • Exercise
    • Weight
    • Medication
    • Mood
    • Appointments
  • Habits
    • Reading
    • Cleaning
    • Screen time
    • Diet
    • Sleep
  • Finance
    • Spending
    • Budget
    • Long term savings
    • Debt payoff
    • Vacation fund
  • Other
    • Drawings
    • Wish lists
    • Quotes & Affirmations
    • Paper mementos
    • Pictures
    • To do lists

Journaling has been a tool for me to discover myself. If you aren’t journaling- consider what it could do for you. When you are looking back at yourself in 5 years- how would you like to have one, physical place which allows you to see how much you’ve grown? Pick up your favorite pen and notebook. Give it a chance to see what it can do for you.

Materials:

You can use anything that you have available to journal. I would recommend starting out that way! Use what brings you joy. There are a lot of options out there for journals and supplies. Here are links to my tried and true favorites.
